The original illustration from 1996 is based on four different comic strips created by Tove Jansson: Moomin and the Martians (1957), Jungle Life (1956), Building a House (1956), and Snorkmaiden Goes Rococo (1958). The most iconic scene in the illustration – and perhaps in Moomin Arabia’s entire product history – shows Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden hugging, taken from the comic Moomin and the Martians. In the story, a curious Moomintroll examines a broken device found in the Martians’ crashed flying saucer and accidentally shrinks himself and Moominmamma to miniature size. This sets off a whirlwind of events, which ends when one of the Martians helps reverse the shrinking effect. Relieved, Snorkmaiden hugs Moomintroll, who is back to his normal self.
